Race Official Certification

Race Official Certification Course

To standardize races across the US and follow the IDBF International Race Official (IRO) standard, the USDBF regularly offers a virtual Race Official certification course. The course covers:

  • Race organization
  • Four stations:
    • Marshaling
    • Start
    • Umpire
    • Finish line
  • Racing rules and protocol
  • Roles and responsibilities of officials
  • Open book test
  • Interactive discussions of racing scenarios

After course completion, candidates must complete a minimum of 4 hours of practical experience at each of four stations to be considered for USDBF Senior Race Official (SRO) status. The information in this course is also very helpful for athletes, coaches, and race organizers to better understand how races work—whether they intend to certify as an official or not.

This course is the first step to becoming an IDBF International Race Official (IRO).
